How to Vibe Code: A Beginner's Guide

Vibecoding is the fastest way to go from idea to working software. Here's how to get started with AI pair programming, what to expect, and the three mistakes beginners make.

Vibecoding is the practice of building software by describing what you want in plain English and letting an AI write the code. No, you don't need a computer science degree. Yes, real products ship this way every single day.

This guide walks you through your first vibe-coded project, start to finish.

What vibecoding actually is

At its core, vibecoding is a conversation. You say what you want, the AI writes code, you run it, you see what breaks, you tell the AI to fix it. Repeat until it works.

you:  It breaks on mobile. Fix that.

That loop — prompt, run, fix, repeat — is the whole skill. Vibecoding isn't "not knowing how to code." It's knowing how to direct an engineer who happens to be a robot.

What you need to get started

Only four things:

  1. An AI coding tool (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, or similar)
  2. A place to run code (or just your laptop)
  3. A small, specific problem to solve
  4. Patience for the first hour

That's it. No prior coding experience required.

Your first session, step by step

Pick something tiny. A landing page. A habit tracker. A tool that renames your files.

Step 1 — Describe the goal in one sentence. "I want a single-page site that shows a daily quote."

Step 2 — Let the AI scaffold it. Most tools will create the whole project structure for you. Say "yes" to starting files.

Step 3 — Run it. You will see errors. This is normal and good. Paste the error back to the AI. It fixes them faster than you'd think.

Step 4 — Refine. Change one thing at a time. "Make the quote bigger." "Put a share button under it." Small prompts produce predictable results.

Don't worry if what it writes looks foreign. You don't need to read it to use it:

Three mistakes beginners make

Mistake 1: Asking for the world on the first prompt. Start with one screen, one feature. Big builds break in ways that are hard to debug.

Mistake 2: Not running the code. Some people treat the AI like a fortune teller and never execute what it writes. The feedback loop only works if you actually run things.

Mistake 3: Giving up after one failed attempt. The AI is not wrong in a way that should stop you. It's wrong in a way that should make you prompt again with the error message included.

When to keep going

Vibecoding gets dramatically easier after your third or fourth project. You start to notice patterns: how to phrase prompts, what kinds of questions get useful answers, and which parts of a project the AI handles instantly.

The bar for "good enough" is lower than you think. A working tool for yourself, even a janky one, beats a perfect tool that never gets built.
